SUSTAINABLE HISTORIC BUILDINGS

Dear Friends,

Schiffer Publishing is known throughout the United States and beyond as a publisher of vibrant, full-color photo books on a variety of topics.  From architecture to interior design to regional lifestyle books, Schiffer’s catalog inspires architects, engineers, designers, developers, and organizations.  Schiffer is now pleased to turn its attention to an exciting new book, “Sustainable Historic Buildings.”

This book will focus on “green” historic buildings.  By their very nature, historical buildings incorporate many of the same features that green designers use today: sustainable sites, natural landscaping, energy efficiency, local materials, etc.  While the green building movement has exploded in recent years, only now are architects and engineers turning their attention to the “greenest” buildings of all: ones that already exist.

Sample Project
The former York County Court House was adaptively reused into a county government office building, obtaining LEED certification in the process.  The building was originally built in 1898 and expanded in 1957.  Historic architectural details were restored or preserved.

Have you been involved with any sustainable historic buildings?  I’m looking for renovation, expansion, and/or adaptive reuse projects performed on buildings at least 50 years of age.  These buildings must be completed, but need not be certified (e.g., LEED, Green Globe, etc.), though certified projects are certainly acceptable and encouraged.

This is where you come in.  This is a free opportunity for your firm or organization.  I’m looking for the best sustainable historic renovation projects across the country.  Do you have such a project?  If so, please complete the form for consideration.  If your project is selected, we will give credit with project profile/photograph and direct readers to your company with phone, Web site, and address information.  Because of the number of organizations and communities that will be involved with this project, Schiffer will not be able to distribute complimentary copies once published; however, there will be a wholesale discount for submitters of the profiles/photos chosen for the book.

Sample Project
A former tobacco warehouse, this building was renovated and converted into a high-tech corporate center with loft-style offices.  A modern addition complements the early 20th century building, which was restored. Green features abound in this urban redevelopment project.

The deadline for submission is technically closed, but we are still seeking additional submissions ASAP.  We will also give preference to projects with high quality before and after photographs.  We ask for high-resolution digital photos that must be 350 ppi or larger TIFF files sent to us via e-mail, CD or DVD.  We will also consider slides, transparencies, or prints that are at least 4 x 6 (but preferably larger).  Please see the submission guidelines.

The book will be compiled by Schiffer author Scott D. Butcher.  Scott has extensive experience marketing architectural/engineering services and has been involved with downtown redevelopment, historic preservation, and tourism promotion, including serving as an officer for the Main Street and architectural preservation organizations in York, Pennsylvania. He is the author of York: America’s Historic Crossroads and the forthcoming titles, Delaware Reflections and Gettysburg Reflections, all from Schiffer Publishing.  He is also the author of York’s Historic Architecture, Postcard History Series: York, and Marketing in the Building Industry.

Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. has over 3,000 titles and produces about 250 new titles a year.  They specialize in high-quality picture books, and distribute them worldwide.  You can find their books in major bookstores such as Barnes and Noble and Borders as well as in independent and online stores.  Or check them out at www.schifferbooks.com.  Schiffer’s books on interior design, landscaping and architecture have been enormously popular in bookstores and throughout their international distribution system, and they expect that this book will do equally well.

All original photography will be returned upon completion of the book.

I hope we will be able to work together, and look forward to hearing from you.
