Scott D. Butcher is a lifelong resident of York County and has spent much of the past decade promoting York’s history.  He is the author of the popular Postcard History Series: York from Arcadia Publishing and has written extensively about York for Pennsylvania magazine, York County Visitors Guide, RelocationLink: York County, Revolutionary York visitors guide, and Showcase!, among other publications.

In 2004 Butcher helped create York Patriot Days, an event promoting York’s Civil War Heritage.  In doing so he researched and wrote a drama about the occupation of York and created a guided Civil War walking tour of the downtown.  He volunteers with the York County Heritage Trust and serves as a living historian in their Civil War / Victorian Living History Program.  Butcher also serves on the task force working to promote York as one of the seven “Gateway Communities” as part of the new Pennsylvania Civil War Trail.

He currently serves on the executive committee and board of directors for Historic York, Inc. and previously served on the board of directors for Main Street York, York County Convention & Visitors Bureau and Leadership York.  He is a member of the task force working to create the William Goodridge Freedom House – An Underground Railroad Museum.

In addition to writing about the area, Butcher is an avid photographer of York and York County and his images have appeared in many publications including American Heritage, Pennsylvania, and Antique Automobile, among other.  He also exhibits at Yorkfest every August.  He created Web sites to promote York County’s Civil War history, www.yorkcivilwar.com, and York’s historic architecture, www.virtualyork.com.

Butcher is director of business development for NuTec Design Associates, Inc., a York-based architectural firm, and JDB Engineering, Inc., a York-based engineering firm.  The companies have been active in York’s renaissance, designing the Greenway Tech Centre, conversion of the York County Court House to the York County Administrative Center, and streetscape design guidelines for downtown York.

As a volunteer, Butcher has been instrumental in creating several events in York, including the annual Pear Blossom Festival and Holiday Open House.  Butcher earned a B.S. in Marketing from the Pennsylvania State University and a Certificate in Professional Photography from the New York Institute of Photography.  He is also a Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) through the Society for Marketing Professional Services.  Currently, Butcher is hard at work on his next book, an architectural guide to York City and York County.

In 1994, Butcher co-founded the Central Pennsylvania affiliate chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services and served on the governing committee for six years.  He has published numerous articles on marketing professional services in such publications as SMPS Marketer, Pennsylvania Contractor, PSMJ Best Practices, and NECA Marketing Advise and Customer Relations Report.  Several years ago he published a collection of these articles, Marketing in the Building Industry, available from Amazon.com and Booklocker.com.

Butcher also enjoys public speaking, whether to a local Rotary Club or professional society.  Over the years he has given presentations on York’s postcards, architecture, local history, marketing planning, business writing, and photography.  In fact, Butcher combined his hobbies of public speaking and history and has led many downtown walking tours: York in the Civil War, York architecture, York history, York legends and lore, and others.

Butcher resides in east York with his wife, Debbie, who works for the York County Community Foundation and volunteers with a number of local non-profit organizations.  In fact, community service is a family affair.  Between Debbie and Scott, his parents – Marla and Don Butcher, and his sister – Debbie Bieber, the family has served on the boards of directors for over 15 local non-profits during the past decade!
