| Whether you like Broadway shows, symphony
concerts, or country music, there is no need to leave the county
for a little "big city" entertainment. From "A
Christmas Carol" to Mandy Patinkin to Jim Brickman, the
Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center hosts a full slate of
big-name entertainers and touring Broadway Shows. The
"Strand" – as the locals call it – is also home to
the York Symphony Orchestra. Quality local productions can be
found at York Little Theater and Hanover Community Playhouse. Every
September, the Great York Fair
– the oldest fair in the United States – plays host to a
number of well-known performers in the pop, rock, and country
genres.
There are also a number of museums located in and around the
York area. The York County Heritage Trust maintains a
museum in center city York which includes – among other things
– a replica of the town square from a bygone area. The
Heritage Trust also oversees the Colonial Courthouse and
Gates House/Plough Tavern, Bobb
Log House, the Agricultural and Industrial
Museum, Indian Steps Museum, and
the Fire Museum of York County.
Every August, Yorkfest (formerly the Riverwalk Arts Festival)
is held along the banks of the Codorus Creek. Here local and
regional artists display and sell their paintings, photographs,
sculptures, and crafts. York Arts, Inc. in downtown York,
maintains a showroom featuring local
artists.
