Founded in 1772, the Laurel Fire Company is one of the oldest fire companies in the United States. The Rex & Laurel Fire House was built in 1878, and has to be one of the most striking firehouses in the nation. It is constructed in the Italianate Style, with a Gothic sub-type. Architectural features include round and pointed arches, quoins, wide eaves with brackets, pediments over the garage doors, hood molds above the windows, paired arched windows, and modillions.
